[handwriting is rather poor]

I've become rather curious about something I only recently became aware of, and I was hoping that perhaps the input of others might clarify things somewhat.

What language do you speak now?
What language do you hear others speaking?
What language is this written in?

It's a matter of... some importance to me. If you would be kind enough to answer, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, my dear human Captain, I was hoping to meet with you again sometime today, if only to prove to myself you weren't a desperate fantasy! Please, let me know what time would be most advantageous for us to... talk again. I do so miss you when we are apart!

Um, I speak Japanese and passed the third level of the English test, so I can understand some English. Everyone else speaks Japanese though--

Whoa, that's kind of weird. Isn't this place supposed to be in America somewhere?

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, this is distressing.

I speak English and so does everyone else, from my perspective at least. I assumed, since this place is in America, that everyone would speak and write English. However I have seen some other languages on this board and heard them spoken. But I've never heard anyone speak Japanese here before.

Excuse my ignorance, if it's obvious to someone from Earth, but how do you know we're in America? (And is that indicating that we're on one of the two American continents, or that we're in the United States of?)

I heard from a reliable source that we are in New Jersey, which is a state in the United States of America. Our trip into town also proved that we are in the New England vicinity of the USA, based on weather conditions, the type of shops in town, seasonal elements, and the types of trees in the park. All pointed to, if not New Jersey, the American east coast at least.

Thank you; that's very interesting, and useful.

You're welcome. :) Glad to be of use.

I can understand English, but I'm not fluent yet. I only have the third level. I'm studying for the second though...

I'm writing in Japanese right now. I wouldn't be able to communicate this well in any other language yet.

Well, what you wrote certainly looks like English to me. And I can speak and read business-level Japanese.

I'm writing this sentence in Japanese. Can you read it? Well, of course you can read it, but is it the same as the rest of the note?

--A.F. II

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Um...yeah. It all looks the same to me.

Man, how long did it take you to learn business-level Japanese? All the morons in my school can't do a thing. They can't even read classical yet.

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Japanese was my... I want to say fifth or sixth language, so only about a year. I'd studied Chinese previous, so the writing system came rather easily. The vocabulary was probably the most difficult part, as it really has no counterpart with any other language. But I managed.

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
A year?! You did that in a year?

...Are you like some kind of genius or something?

-R.Aoyagi

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am a genius. I have the highest IQ in Europe, where I come from.

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
...damn. This place must really drive you up the wall then.

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
About three times in the span of a week, yes. It's especially difficult on those who have no inclination to fighting, as this place is set up to be easier on those with fighting prowess instead of those who are intellectually centered.

Sucks that our library is so small, right?

And I've noticed. Seems like the ones who can't fight get turned into cannon fodder or meat shields. It's so wrong.

-R.Aoyagi

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
It is! It seems like I'm always the one taking the lion's share of injuries and whatnot. Fortunately I have yet to be used as a meat shield, but still... I am a small, moving, easy meal for some hungry monster.

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I hear you on that. It worries my friends, but I'm used to it already.

I haven't either even though it's my job, but I tend to stick with an older friend and it saves me from being a meal most of the time. You have people to stick with at night?

-R.Aoyagi

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not something you should get used to, although I'm sad to say that I was surprised last night. I didn't incur one single injury. How about that for luck?

Well, maybe a bruise on the back of my head, but I didn't bleed.

I'm glad to hear you have someone to stay with during the night. I travel with a group as well. Doing otherwise would be suicide, I think.

--A.F. II

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nn, yeah, guess so.

Bruise on the back of your head? How'd you get away with just that?

Ah, good. I was worried for a second there that you were just wandering around. Guess I shouldn't have, considering how you're a genius though. Probably have a whole band of people lined up, huh?

-R.Aoyagi

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... let's just say that if you're ever in the basement, and you come across a room full of dummies and you yourself are unarmed? Don't try to hit them.

A whole band? Well, something like that. But I don't command a force, goodness no. But I do have friends in high places and a safety net just in case. Being a genius isn't always equated with being prepared, though. It helps to always have a backup plan. And a backup plan for the backup plan, and a failsafe plan.

--A.F. II

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh...right.

Wait, there's a basement? I haven't been paying close attention to the radio or the intercom for awhile now. When the hell did we get a basement?

Huh, I don't have anything like that. I have Soubi my friend and that's...about it, but I trust him. I know he won't let me down.

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
A few nights ago. The entrance is in the refrigerator in the first-floor kitchen. Under a discolored tile. But I wouldn't suggest going down there alone--I'm still not sure if there are monsters down there and if so, what kinds and how dangerous they are. So far, I haven't seen anything.

It's good to have someone to trust. For a long time, all I had were people who worked under me, and I certainly didn't trust them. I used them much like chess pieces, and I knew they would do whatever I asked of them. Horrible, isn't it? Lonely as well. I'm glad you have a friend you can trust so implicitly.

--A.F. II

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, interesting. I haven't been to the kitchen yet. I usually get attacked before I can go anywhere. I'll be sure to remember that.

Ch' my "friend" might like you. He prefers it when people treat him like a thing, but I can't stand it. I'm guessing this is why you're researching 'friends,' right? I'm sorry that, you know, you had to deal with all that - having no trust.

I know what it's like in a way.

-R.Aoyagi

[identity profile] byname-bynature.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, it was a chore getting there, but it was interesting once we made it. I seem to recall running by at least... three highly skilled fighters before making it to the basement. So you aren't alone in being attacked, believe me.

I really don't want to treat people like things anymore. People have feelings and lives and aspirations and their own thoughts. It's not for me to dictate how they move or how they live their lives.

But yes, this is why I'm fascinated by friends. Especially ones I've made here, since I've only been here a week. [tear splotch] It took me months to make friends at home. But I'm slowly starting to trust those I work with here as much as I trusted my friend back home.

I miss him, though. Everyday.

[identity profile] forgot-it-all.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish you could tell that to my friend. He won't listen unless I force him, and that defeats the meaning so it's kind of...like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, yeah? I have some other friends here, but I'm starting to think I'm losing touch with them...

Make sure your friends know how much they mean to you. You never know when they could go away. I lost someone here already, and I've never stopped regretting it.
