I have a hunch based on personal experience, and it has to do with getting your hands dirty, as in, doing stuff for Landel. Not fun at all.

He has ways of making people think things are one way when they are another way, at least until they wake up the next morning. And then he rewards them for being such nice little puppets for him. It happens on a regular basis.
