Damon Gant was a fine detective before he let the ends justify the means. Justice is not always kind, but the alternative is crueler.

No one guessed, until Mr. Wright. Damon's intentions might have been good, once, but the pursuit of justice has limits. We ignored them at our folly.

It does. I don't know what their professional relationship was like, but I can't imagine that was an easy time to be on the force.
