When I was back at home, around this time of year, we had a festival called Watanagashi. It was the big event of the year when I was back at home, and I was the shrine maiden who did the festival dance. After it was over, we took cotton from a torn-apart futon and sent it floating down the river. The cotton soaked up any sin you'd done that year, and you let it go and...yes.

What kind of festivals happened when you were home? I want to hear about them.

Not really this time of year, but in November we make effigies of a man called Guy Fawkes, parade it around villages and then throw it onto a bonfire to burn. There are fireworks and sweets and food too.

Fireworks and sweets, those sound fun! But why do you burn up an effigy of that man?

Because he tried to blow up the Houses or Parliament. He was captured and tortured and died an appropriately painful death. This is how we remember him.

Well, that's certainly one way to remember someone. Not that I think he was so good for trying to blow up important places, he definitely wasn't, but...I don't think anyone needs to die really painfully.

I think I told you about this before, but my city has the Lorelei Festival every year on New Year's. People come from all over the world for it. There's a big ceremony at the cathedral, and lots of festivities in the streets!

Yeah, you told me about that! I'd love to see it one day. It sounds so much fun!

Alba city throws a big Halloween party every year, if that counts.

Hm... in a few days, if I'm not mistaken, it will be St. Swithin's Day. And after that a... rather more serious commemoration. Rather like the celebration of Guy Fawkes mentioned above, but less celebratory. Though perhaps it wouldn't be considered a 'festival' like you had hoped for.
