Please forgive this purely frivolous question, but can anyone tell me about your modern flying machines?  I'd be very interested in any information that could be supplied.  They sound fascinating.  Thank you!

What manner of flying machine are you inquiring about?

[identity profile] reanalyze.livejournal.com 2007-06-28 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes! At least in my experience.... I'm afraid a detailed explanation would be far too long for a note here, however.

...flying machines? People are flying?

I have to admit, it's actually a little disconcerting. Although, it must be a very unique experience to soar the skies like a bird.

And they can go faster than sound. Can you fucking believe it? Or at least that's what the one book said.

I kind of hope it's true.

Faster than sound?! How is that even possible? Which book is this? I'm interested in reading it for myself.

Faster than sound? Yeah, but all the Concordes were retired a few years ago so the only way you'd get to fly like that would be becoming a pilot for the military or something.

Flying machines?

I've never ridden in one, but I saw some once beyond the Gate. I think it was called a zeppelin or something.

I wouldn't know. I never saw one from the right angle. It looked pretty big to me though, like a giant balloon thing and then another bit attached to it.

What, those giant balloon things?

I don't know. I only know what I was told. It was some place called uh... London? And things were on fire.

Which ones? Air or space?

Well, once you get far enough away from a planet, there's no more air. (Well, technically there's some, but it's not enough to support an airplane.) So I'm talking space like outer space. Between the stars. The big and black.

That would be me.

Well, it's somewhat complicated, however, where I am from there are several different types.

The first type depends on two aerodynamic wings, curved on one side and flat on the other, air takes longer to pass over the upper side of the wing, and the faster moving air creates pressure. To get the plain off the ground a propeller is used, powered by an internal combustion engine that rotates it at a high enough speed so that the flying machine is moving forward fast enough to lift off the ground because of the shape of the wings.

That one generally has a slow increase in altitude, and cannot turn as quickly as the other types.

The second type is a 'helicopter' which uses a single large propeller mounted on top to pull it into the air, and one on the tail to stabilize it and allow it to turn.

The last type resembles the first, in that it has two wings, however, it has no propellers and uses a jet engine. It is capable of moving at much higher speeds. These are the ones that fly faster than the speed of sound.

For space flight, the current technology depends on multi-stage rockets and large amounts of fuel to escape the Earth's gravitational pull.

...actually, I'll add onto this, there are also things called blimps and hot air balloons. A blimp is an extremely large, slow moving air-ship, and a hot air balloon is smaller. The blimp has a propeller to steer it, and the hot air balloon goes in whichever direction the wind is blowing.

Also, there are para-sails... Well, I think that's a good enough basic overview of the technology I'm familiar with.

They serve different purposes.

Those are just general over-views, there are literally hundreds of different types of jet airplanes and helicopters and propeller airplanes. Each one serves a purpose or is an advancement on the previous model.

We have all of that stuff where I'm from--planes, helicopters, balloons, etc.--but we also have something else. They're called airships. They aren't very widely used, but they're massive. The size of a small ocean liner.

Oh, and one of the people here actually built the first rocket ship. It didn't go very well.
