[warning: long answer is long!]

The majority of experiences I've taken down proceeded as follows:

1. Flickering walls/ 'glitches'
2. Seeing a 'ghost' of a dead loved one
3. Hearing 'voices'
4. Experiencing said loved one's death exactly, complete with visible symptoms
5. Waking up the following morning

It is interesting to note that seeing the 'glitches' of stage one was not limited to those who continued through the following four stages; I myself noted precisely the same thing, but did not experience 'death'. This would suggest that there was a turning point some time in the night at which stages 2-5 were set in motion for some.

Psychologically speaking, one must first determine what the purpose of the attack was, be it torture, an expression of control or an accident brought about by malfunction in the Institute's programming- certainly, IRIS' breakdown would suggest as much. However, the following message was played in binary before stage 2 was reached: "The dead can be more alive for us, more powerful, more scary, than the living. It is the question of ghosts". Even without dissecting the quote, one can clearly see that it relates immediately to stages 2-4. Given that it is highly unlikely that IRIS would be programmed to play such a message on breaking down, one would conclude that events were deliberate.

Just who set events in motion and why, however, I am rather more reluctant to share in such a public place. I have a working theory, but it relies on whether or not we hear from Landel at the beginning of the night.
