They're dinosaurs. Prehistoric, cold-blooded animals that roamed the earth up until about 60 million years ago, give or take. Most of them were giants, but raptors were one of the few that were actually shorter than humans. Think of a carnivorous lizard on two legs, six feet long and reaching at about your knee.

...That's unpleasant. I've never heard of these 'dinosaurs' before, but I am glad they all died. Did the gods slay them?

Not...I'm assuming they didn't, but you know. Different worlds have different ways and all that jazz.

There's a couple of different theories about how they died. Some people think it was a giant meteor, others think it was a shift in climate and they couldn't cope, Deccan Traps volcanic eruptions, etc. No one's pinned it down yet.
