Boxing club, anyone?

As suggested here, I think we could all use some sort of healthy outlet for frustration. If we have that, we can focus on the overall goal better.

I tried speaking to the staff about this (yes, using their kind of psychobabble) and they shot it down. But it doesn't mean a few of us can't meet every so often at night to spar, or get a few matches in.

I'm more than happy to serve as leader for this little exercise. I'm Akihiko Sanada, and as others here can vouch, I've served as the captain of the Gekkoukan High School boxing team for the past several years. I'm ranked pretty highly nationally, and I'm proud of my skills. But that doesn't mean I don't welcome a chance to keep them honed.

We'll be following standard rules for this kind of thing, so no fighting dirty. And if you need a refresher course in those rules, let me know. I'll be happy to provide one.

Also, suggestions on a place would be welcome. I'd be willing to start this thing up tonight, if there's enough interest.

I've only just arrived, but I would be interested in participating. Would this be limited to boxing, or would you also include other forms of physical combat?

We could certainly expand it to other forms of physical combat, as the participants want. I'm most familiar with boxing, personally, but if other people want to teach their styles, it's fine by me.

I haven't been formally trained in any specific style, but I have received basic military instruction in hand-to-hand combat. They've dulled my reflexes here; I want to determine to what extent. This sounds like a good way to do so.

I don't know what you mean by training arc, but no, we're not going to be fighting bears. Or any other sort of animal.

You know, like in the comics when the hero finds out that he's too weak to defeat the bad guy so he goes onto this ten day quest to get a new fighting technique. And then he gets to the bad guy and he's like "HRAAAAH I am powerful!" and the bad guy goes "No way, I'm more powerful!" and this goes on for another 5 chapters until the hero unleashes his super attack and defeats the villain?

Like that.

Are we at least going to train?

Now this certainly would be a good way to let out some of the frustrations I've been feeling as of late. I don't specifically know boxing, but I have been trained in a military style of hand-to-hand combat, as this person has. [arrow to Soma's posts] I haven't had to use said style of fighting for a long time now, though, so these sessions would be very useful for getting back into practice.

But where would you get all the boxes from? And what are you going to put in them?

...oh, wait. Boxing's a sport - a form of combat, really. It has nothing to do with putting things in boxes.

Oh. Okay.

Then why do they call it boxing?

The word 'boxing', in this sense, is derived from an old German word, 'boki', which means 'to strike'.

Oh.

So boxing is hitting things?

Well, it's more similar to a martial art, where each participant uses one's fists to strike the other. There are rules, such as no kicking, no biting ~~despite Mike Tyson's terrible example~~, and no hitting below the belt. Each match is divided up into rounds, and the fighters take a quick rest between each round.

Does that make things clearer?

Do you have any issues with girls joining? Some guys have this weird thing about hitting girls. Even when he knows she can kick his ass.

I'd be happy to take part; as you say, it would be a way to relieve frustration.

Also, might I suggest one of the rooms off of the Sun Room for an arena? Some of them, like the Music Room, would have room, and yet it would be contained against monsters. So long as there isn't anything particularly vicious in the Sun Room- a long bet, I admit- that might be the best location.
