It depends on what kind of weapon you want. There are some weapons that can be found around the institute itself, but they won't be perfect. I've seen people with bats, wooden rods, metal pipes, and so on. With enough looking, items like that can be found, but if you want something more reliable you'll most likely have to turn to someone who can make them. There are a few of us around now, but the waiting lists are long and I imagine we all require you to gather the necessary metal yourself.
