Each person reads another person's native language as their own native language.
Secondary languages can only be read by native speakers of that language, or secondary speakers of that language.
If one person writes in their secondary language, but someone else responds in their native language, third party readers who don't know that language will be able to read the reply but not the initial statement, even if the languages are the same.
Presumably, the same's true of spoken language. Hope that helps.
