Because you're too special to be weaker than anyone else? I've met lots of guys like you, guys who were ready to roll over and die when they lost. I've been that way too. I ran out on my best friend who needed me, and I showed a bad back to the one kid who was fighting to keep everything together when everything was lost. All of that? That's too fucking easy to do.

Kid, you're a lot better off than you should be. You don't know a damn thing about that technique, or about what it took to learn it. Don't talk about it like it's some cheap trick, because it's not. The guy who made it put everything he had into creating it, and I risked my life to learn it.

Tomorrow night. Normally I'd just be looking forward to a good fight, but you're pissing me off.

That doesn't surprise me, because I've heard all of this before. Perhaps you did risk your life to learn the technique, and everything one great fighter had was poured into creating it.

To me, it's still nothing more than a trick to be learned, and potentially to be discarded- the cost you paid didn't go unnoticed. One more repetition and I'll master it. I would have managed it last night, if I hadn't been so distracted.

When I say 'mastery,' I am not idly boasting. Every last detail and possibility. Enough to begin putting my own interpretation on it soon thereafter. Now do you begin to see the difference between us?

I have no doubt as to that last assertion, obviously. But when I'm back at full strength, perhaps that will change.

I'm really starting to understand you, kid. You don't have a clue what strength is, and you don't have a clue what it means to really fight.

I hope some day, some guy comes up who's stronger than you could ever be, and kicks your ass. And I hope maybe that guy will be able to open your damn eyes.

But I'm not going to waste my time of a fight like this. Not with some punk who can't understand anything.

It's already happened, Sanosuke. There are those who, in my world, can not be defeated by someone with my power, nor with yours. To say nothing of those who, in this Institute, have managed to defeat me quite handily, all my strength to the contrary.

But I am not yet so weak that I can't hold my own in an fair fight. If you can't understand that, or why this means so much to me, then perhaps it would be best for you to remain at a distance.

I get why it means so much to escape, and I get why it means so much to be able to fight. I got left behind once because the guy thought I was a burden, and I've lost a lot of times before. What I don't understand is why you're letting it beat you, because you can hold your own.

And maybe the other thing you don't get, is that Kenshin can't have that kind of weakness going into his sword. Fuck your fancy lights. If you can't be confident, then Kenshin can't get his sakabato from you. End of story.
