Yes, there are monsters. A lot of the time, you can avoid them. For when you can't... well, travel in a group, and carry sharp instruments. There are a lot of different types... the salamander I ran into my first night wasn't a particularly large threat, but I've heard of far more dangerous ones.

The most important thing is to be careful.
