The armor is not unusual among my former fellows. And I am was the son the adopt the stolen bast [ink blot] part of a noble house, which is why the quality is so fine.

I told you I am a scholar. I am. But I am also a magician. I did not wish to share that because I feared it would cause me to be treated with suspicion and contempt, as has happened before. (Though Lady Tsubaki has now informed me under no uncertain terms of the error of that thinking.) It seemed unimportant at any rate, since it seems I am incapable of working my will unless under the control of our captor.

I am heartily sorry if I have hurt you with that, but I have grown accustomed to keeping my own counsel. That there might be trustworthy people with whom to speak of such things is still a foreign concept to my mind.
