I don't think I'll ever understand why people do what they do here. But, maybe you're right; maybe they're just trying to puff themselves up so they look different. It hasn't always been the case, though; for those of us who've been here a very, very long time, I think some of us look forward to being kind to the new ones. At least, I do.
